Introduction                                                                                                 DNA test kit

The Kirkman DNA Project covers the names KIRKMAN, KIRKMANN, KERKMAN KIRCHMAN, and similar derivations. More surnames will be added if they are shown to be derived from the same root, and/or assist in the objectives of the project.

The main objective is to link together branches of our family that cannot otherwise be linked due to lack of documented genealogical records. A secondary goal is to determine the number of unique (i.e. not connected) lines that exist.

Benefits of Joining

Perhaps you are stuck in your genealogical research, or have got back so far that you cannot  make further discoveries? Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which may help with your family history research. We will also discover which family trees are related.  By joining the project, you also may find that the conventional research done by others is of benefit to you. Already, many participants have found out new information about their line - some going back to the fifteenth century!

The Basics of DNA Testing

The most useful test is for Y-DNA. This test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time.  You must be male to take this test, and should have the Kirkman surname.  If you believe there is a Kirkman in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate.  If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree. We recommend males who join to order the 37 or 67 marker Y-DNA tests (see costs below). If you order a 12 or 25 marker Y-DNA test, you can upgrade later.

Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line, which  would be their mother, their mother's mother, and back in time. Only women pass on mtDNA to their daughters. mtDNA can also help identify sisters when there is a direct female line down from the two

target  sisters. For mtDNA pricing, click here

All the DNA test results contain no personal information, and you will match or be a close match to those to whom you are related.

Family Finder DNA Test
The Family Finder test is for both males & females, and can find your cousins of either gender. Also it can help adoptees find their roots. You can discover connections to descendants of all sixteen of your great-great-grandparents! The Family Finder test will not only open avenues for traditional research but may help you discover the hidden connections that could explain your family’s migrations. The Cost
If you join our project, you will get a significant price discount. The discounted prices for Y-DNA tests are Y-DNA: 12 markers $59 (more for anthropology since a match could be 1000-10000 yrs ago, but a useful low cost entry into the Kirkman DNA Project);  25 markers $109; 37 markers $149 & 67 markers $248 (37 or 67 markers recommended). Keep visiting the Family Tree DNA web site to find special offers available from time to time.

Test Results
The Y-DNA test results so far reveal that of the 80 Kirkman Project members, the 61 members who tested for Y-DNA are in 9 separate Groupings You can see these results on the Kirkman Project web-site here:
